Machine Operators

At Somerville Industries machine operators perform tasks to set up, monitor, maintain, troubleshoot and operate a variety of machines throughout our shops.

 Machine Operator Level 1

Starting Wage - $14.50/HR

  • Ability and desire to learn new tasks

  • Keep shop clean and safe – free from debris and spills

  • Complete Somerville Crane and Forklift certification

  • Follow safety regulations and proper PPE usage

  • Returns all equipment, parts, etc. to proper storage areas in accordance with 5S system

  • Ensures proper handling of tools, equipment, and stock to prevent safety incidents

  • Set up and operate machines with proper tooling and consumables for current job needs

  • Set up and operate each machine verifying accuracy of settings and programmed data under general supervision

  • Continually ensure machine is free from excess scrap or debris to perform at high efficiency

  • Grind out burrs, sharp edges, rust, and/or scale using a portable grinder

  • Maintain and clean machines before and after each shift

  • Perform minor routine maintenance and coordinate efforts with maintenance on repair issues to be resolved

  • Utilize computer (Tekla) system shared plant-wide to accomplish and track production data

  • Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template

  • Presents acceptable work to QC Manager

~ Generally 1-3 years experience

Machine Operator Level 2

Starting Wage - $18.25/HR

  • Consistent demonstration of desire and proven ability to learn new tasks

  • Communicates with other co-workers to coordinate activities under minor supervision

  • Understand blueprints and drawings to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements

  • Inspect workpiece for defects, quality-related exceptions, and judges condition and action to be taken

  • Perform preventative maintenance (PM) and begin troubleshooting issues with equipment

  • Ensures accurate procedures of all relevant quality, safety, and maintenance

  • Ensure that machines are calibrated and producing high quality products

  • Advanced machine operator with capabilities of running most shop equipment

  • Participation in Somerville Safety Program

  • Proficient with all Machine Operator Level 1 Skills/Tasks

~ Generally 3-7 years experience

Machine Operator Level 3

Starting Wage - $20.00/HR

  • Volunteer and perform other miscellaneous projects and duties assigned by shop foreman

  • Advanced skill level for reading and understanding engineering drawings, blueprints, and measurements to plan layouts

  • Expert machine operator with capabilities of running all shop equipment

  • Applying knowledge and experience to determine the best method to achieve completion of processing in a safe, timely, and high-quality manner

  • Lead machine maintenance and troubleshooting issues with equipment

  • Checks work using gauges, jigs, and fixtures to measure close tolerances

  • Independently run multiple lines including setting up and managing changeovers

  • Actively participates in continuous improvement and corrective action activities

  • Ensure stocks of needed materials are ready and available at all times

  • Forward thinking and planning ahead for next processing assignment

  • Exhibits the desire and ability to learn additional skills outside of current job task

  • Creates team environment, help mentor/coach Machine Operator Levels 1 and 2

  • Supporting and leading a safe culture making safety a priority

  • Proficient with all Machine Operator Level 1 & 2 Skills/Tasks

  • Participation and Involvement in Somerville Safety Program

~ Generally 7-10+ years experience

*Employee must show consistent progress of knowledge and skill
*Evaluation of class will be based off performance review, attendance, safety performance
*Years of experience are a general guideline, no guarantee for level increase
